In November 2020, we recognized a problem in the accessibility of academic publishing. We created Publish & Prosper to help solve this issue. What's the problem? Most high schools and colleges have excellent newspapers but no student-run research journals. As a result, too few youth experience the publishing process. A surplus of talent exists, but so does a dearth in opportunity to showcase young researchers. Because of this gap, students consider publishing inaccessible, a realm of academia not open to them. What's our solution? P&P acts as an incubator that guides high school and college students through the process of founding a journal. Our staff comes from our umbrella organization, a global consortium of over 60 student publications. Why this name? The common adage “publish or perish” implies a criticism of the ethos of academia and research journals today. The name “Publish and Prosper” signals our desire to move away from this norm and toward a new, more equitable role for student publications as platforms for scholarship and personal expression.
